Classic Stereo, Ltd. was
founded in 1982 by two audio enthusiasts who had become disenchanted
by the changing business practices of their employer, the now defunct
Sound Room. Our first store was a small audio boutique, located across
the street from our current Grand Rapids location.
From the very beginning,
the goal was to build the business by selling the best products available,
and backing them up with the best service and expertise in the area.
The growth of the company was remarkable – and within a couple
of years, we were known industry-wide for our progressive retailing
and uncompromising service. In 1985 John Higgs joined the company as
a salesperson and we added a store in Kalamazoo, which quickly established
itself as the
place
to buy
quality
audio
in Southwest Michigan.
The following
year, Dan Johnson came to work at Classic Stereo,
and quickly began working his way up through the ranks. In 1991, Dan
became a partner in the business, and the sole owner of Classic Stereo
in 1992. In 1998, John Higgs, a loyal salesperson and manager
of 13 years, became Dan's partner and Vice President. On April 30, 2006
Dan sold his share of the company to John, who is now President and sole
owner of Classic Stereo.
With the recent changes in the consumer electronics industry, the name
Classic Stereo, Ltd. had to be changed as well. The late 80s showed us
that home theater was the wave of the future and we became CLASSIC
STEREO & VIDEO. Since then, we have also added a
specialized division to our company.
CLASSIC HOME INSTALLATION specializes
in integrating sophisticated audio, video, and home automation products
into one simple, easy-to-operate system that will enhance your lifestyle.
This website shows you many possibilities that you thought could only
be seen on The Jetsons! Our salespeople will show you that they're
available today.
It is because of our commitment to excellence in all of our fields that
we've been frequently recognized by both our own industry and the community.
We received AudioVideo International's prestigious Retailer
of the Year award in 1985, again in 1987, and every year since. And
in 1996, the West Michigan Better Business Bureau proclaimed us Business
of the Year.
At CLASSIC
STEREO & VIDEO, we recognize our responsibility to the
community. Since 1992, we have donated in excess of 10% of our corporate
profits to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers and
Big Sisters, and the Ronald McDonald House. Additionally, our annual
charity golf tournament, the Classic CLASSIC Invitational, is
the largest event of the year each year for the West Michigan chapter
of Special Olympics.
